Tell Me About Prayer

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Read my full disclosure policy .

Tell Me about Prayer is the latest release in the Train ‘Em Up series of children’s books by Steven Elkins. Elkins is a Grammy Award-nominated music producer who is writing books to help children understand basic Christian theology. We were excited to review this book since we want our sons to rely on God in prayer.

Synopsis
“In Tell Me about Prayer, a friendly train conductor, Mr. Steve, teaches kids what prayer is all about, how we should talk to God, and why our conversations are so important to Him. Through bold graphics and interactive songs and stories, Train ’Em Up makes it easy for parents and teachers to explain biblical concepts like prayer in a way that helps with attention, memorization, and recall while building a solid faith foundation. Each book in the series includes a CD with sing-along songs and narrated stories with sound effects, plus a colorful sticker sheet!” (Tyndale)

Overall Thoughts

This book does a great job laying out the main themes every Christian should understand about prayer. Prayer is talking and listening to God, prayer is thanking God, prayer is calling on the right person, etc. Each theme is supported with scripture which we love, but the explanation with each teaching point seems to be full of cliches that I fear might be confusing or unhelpful to the target audience. The book comes with a companion CD and stickers which set it apart from other books. I think the CD is stronger than the book. It is very well-produced and helps bring the book to life. For a teacher looking for some Sunday school lesson supplements Tell Me About Prayer is a good resource. For a mom looking for a book to read before bedtime this book might be a bit of a disappointment. The CD however might be nice to use during room time for a younger child.
