Rules of Murder by Julianna Deering is the first book in the Drew Farthering Mystery series. The storyline takes place during the mid-1900s in Hampshire countryside. The main character Drew Farthering, a want-to-be detective, seeks to find the person responsible for the double-homicide at Farthering Place, with the help of his close friend Nick.
Storyline
“Drew Farthering loves a good mystery. So when a body is discovered during a weekend party at his country estate, Drew decides to look into the crime himself. With the help of his best friend, Nick Dennison, and Madeline Parker, a beautiful and whip-smart American guest, Drew sets out to crack the case. Meanwhile, everyone staying at Farthering Place is in danger of becoming the next victim.
Trying hard to remain one step ahead of the killer—and to impress Madeline—Drew must decide how far to take this dangerous game.” (Bethany House)
Overall Thoughts
I read a lot of the same types of books so, I wanted to try something new. I love a good murder mystery every now and then, so I landed on Rules of Murder. Supposedly if you’re an Agatha Christy fan this novel would be right up your alley. Unfortunately, I’ve never read Agatha Christy and this book was not my favorite. Honestly, if I wasn’t reviewing the book I probably would have never finished it. It took to long to get any where, and once it actually got somewhere, it would downshift again. The book jumped back and forth between the character romance and the murder mystery. Therefore, lacking major development in both areas. The character romance, though clean, reminded me of The Bachelor…meet girl, talk a few times, take girl to big firework show…swoon. I wish there had been more time for them to get to know each other better before making proclamations. As for the murder mystery, there wasn’t much of it, at least not enough to keep my attention and flipping the pages. It does keep you guessing on the “who dunn-it” part. This book may be a better fit for others, but it just wasn’t my cup of tea.
