One Week Down

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Read my full disclosure policy .

Our first week of kindergarten was a success.  The schedule had to be tweak a bit after the second day. My 8 month old decided it would be a good day to start crawling! I’m still trying to nail down our schedule, but I know that it will all work out…by the end of the year!

Here’s a look at our first week.  I didn’t get a chance to “document” a lot, but I was able to get some photos of the crafts we did.

Intro to the World: Cultures (Core A): This week we learned all about the first people.  To go along with our readings we did several crafts.

First People’s Homes
The boy loved doing this cave painting craft.  There are lots of great ways one can go about imitating a cave painting, but we took the simple route.  I just mixed up some different shades of brown tempera paint and cut down a brown lunch bag.   He crumpled the bag to give it a “rock like” texture and then painted an animal.

We also learned about how the first people made their clothes and other accessories.  In the book we’re reading, Living Long Ago, there was a suggestions for making a “mammoth tusks” necklace.  This was another big hit.  The biggest part of this task was drilling holes into the cork, but it didn’t take that much time at all…and gave my husband something to do while watching “Duck Dynasty.”

Reading: This year we are using a combination of reading curriculum.  The boy picked up on decoding quickly, and all by himself, so we usually breeze through our activities.  However, he still needs to work on his fluency and blends.  We’ve been using this week to review.

We are using All About Reading Level 1.  Right now, he is learning how to blend letter sounds together to read words and reviewing beginning letter sounds.  It is really easy for him, but he still enjoys moving the letter tiles around and reading the new words that he creates.  I went with this level because it has fluency practice lessons, as well as lessons introductions to consonants blends and various sounds the vowels make.  I could skip ahead, and I still might, but reviewing never hurts.

Science A: Biology, Botany, and Physics: We are basically building up our background knowledge in science this year.  This first week we read all about Earth.  We learned what the Earth looks like, how it takes 24 hours to spin on its axis, where the sun sets and rises, and seasons.

To elaborate on the seasons, we will be observing a tree in our yard and documenting how it changes.  I provided the boy with this template.  He colored in the trunk of the tree with a marker and painted leaves with a q-tip for our summer tree. We talked about what color the leaves were, so I gave him two shades of green. I hope to turn it into a book at the end of the year.

You all, it is so important to do everything you c You all, it is so important to do everything you can to make sure to maintain your health and your family's too this season. My family and I always take proactive steps in the winter. Honestly, the steps we have taken in the past have kept my family healthy and we rarely get sick. This year we are adding some extra things to help support our immune system. I've had several people asked me what I'm doing, so a few of my friends and I are actually going to have a little sharing session this Wednesday night (8:15 EST). We will be sharing all the ways we stay proactive with our health, especially in the winter. We'll have some practical tips, as well as some, must-haves to keep on hand to help your family stay above that wellness line.

It's happening this Wednesday (11/18) at 8:15 pm EST. Let me know if you want in and I will get you the dets.

We will be talking about essential oils, but there are so many other things we do as well. We will have a packet for everyone that comes, so you won't have to worry about your hand cramping from all the notes you'll want to write down!
You all, I can't believe it is November! However, You all, I can't believe it is November! However, I'm so glad it is because I am tired of all the crazy this year and I need to change my attitude! I'm going to be intentional this month and practice gratitude.

Here's the thing, I think you should join me because research studies show that finding a bit of thankfulness each day can actually increase your happiness level and decrease depression!! It also increases physical health (hello cold & flu season), brain function, and a sense of fulfillment. I know, with everything going on in the world right now I could use a little more of ALL of that!

So, who's with me? What are you thankful for today?

🍂Today I am thankful for the colorful fall leaves swirling by my windows. 🍂
I love this reminder from the Lord! Last week was I love this reminder from the Lord!

Last week was our first week back to homeschool. And I think it is safe to say that we all dealt with an array of emotions that week. I had to give myself a timeout the first day!! So, this reminder is perfect as we begin this week

After evaluating how things went I can see that it was my thoughts and attitude that was the ultimate cause of my feelings of frustration and irritation. Things weren’t going the way I had planned.

I mean, let’s be honest this year isn’t really going as any of us have planned. Am I right?

Here’s the thing, we have a choice in how we think, and since our thoughts affect our emotions, we have a choice in how we feel.

But praise the Lord we don’t have to let our circumstances dictate our attitude or the the way we think!

WHO ELSE NEEDS THE SPIRIT TO RENEW THEIR THOUGHTS AND ATTITUDE THIS WEEK?
