Maleficent {Review}

maleficent536d2cd533b2aEvery great character in any good story has a past. Who they are now usually isn’t who they used to be. Diving into their back story invites us into their emotions and worldview and usually takes us on a ride we didn’t expect.

Storyline

Maleficent is an innocent, young fairy growing up in a peaceful forest kingdom marked with beautiful landscapes and exotic creatures. But when the neighboring human kingdom attacks, Maleficent is compelled to become the guardian of the moors. Her heart is turned completely cold when she discovers that she has been betrayed. Motivated by revenge, Maleficent curses the princess Aurora in the iconic christening scene, but this is just the beginning of the story. How the lives of these two will intertwine is the story you’ve never been told.

Overall

My husband and I both enjoyed this film. Disney is on a roll and Maleficent does not disappoint, but if you think you’re going to see a live action version of the classic animated feature think again. Maleficent takes some twists and turns and shows you a different side of the horned villain.

The story explores the themes of hatred, anger, and revenge. Both Maleficent and King Stefan wrestle with decisions from the past and are forced to face the consequences. You may find times where you aren’t sure who to cheer for.

Angelina Jolie plays a perfect Maleficent. Her character moves through so many emotions and circumstances in the 90+ minute film and she plays her part to a T in every instance.

Bottom Line

Go see this movie! If you are a fan of Sleeping Beauty you will love this reimagined storyline. If you love fantasy movies, knights in shining armor and the like you will love this movie. My husband enjoyed the 3D effects with all the fly over and following Maleficent as she soared through the Moor kingdom. This is definitely not a movie for the youngest members of the family due to some frightening images and scenes, but beyond that this is a movie the whole family can enjoy together.
