“A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit.  ”

Materials:

  • Bible Memory Card
  • A mirror

Directions:

  • Say the verse above with your tot.  We suggest that you print the verse off and use it every morning with your calendar time.  If you don’t do calendar time still say the verse each morning with your tot before you begin tot school.
  • Follow the cues given in this devotional.

Talk with your child about the following:
This week we are learning all about feelings.  We’ve talked about the feelings that we have, haven’t we?  What are some feelings that we’ve talked about?  We’ve talked about being happy, sad, mad, and afraid, haven’t we?  I have with me a mirror and I am wondering if you will help with me something.  I need you to make some faces for me.   When you make a face I want you to look in the mirror, ok?  Do you think you can do that?  Ok, the first face I want you to make is a face that you would make if you were scared.  Can you make a scared face?   Look in the mirror at your scared face!  It makes mommy scared to see your scared face!  Ok, what about a mad face?  Can you show me what you look like when you’re feeling mad?   Ohhh, that is an angry face!  What about sad?  Yeah, we make a crying face when we’re sad, huh?  Ok, last one.  Can you make a happy face?  That’s right!  We smile when we’re happy, don’t we.  I like you’re happy face the best.  God does too.   Our verse today tells us that when we are happy, that our faces show it with a smile.  It also says that when we are sad, our faces can show that, too.  Our faces show everybody what it is we are feeling inside our hearts.  God knows that sometimes things will make us sad, but He also lets us know in the Bible that He will always be there for us.  That can make us very happy, and when our hearts are happy then our faces will show that to everyone else.  Let’s pray that God will always be with us to give us happy hearts.

Dear God, we know that the faces we make say a lot about what we are feeling in our hearts.  We know that you are always with us, and we ask that when we aren’t feeling happy you would help to think of all good and perfect things that you have put in our lives and that you would fill our hearts with joy, because we know that when our hearts are happy, our faces will show that to everyone we meet.  We pray this in your name, Amen.

Questions to ask:

  • You may want to review last weeks questions with your tot
  • Who makes our hearts happy?  God
  • How do other people know that we are happy?  Our faces!
