Dr. Seuss Hat

Since yesterday was Dr. Seuss’s birthday we have been reading lots of Dr. Seuss books.  One particular book that Lil’man has loved is Dr. Seuss’s ABC.  He is really into letters right now and loves to help read this book with me.  I point to the letters and he reads them.  As, we go through the book he often points at one of the crazy animal like creatures and ask, “What’s that?”  It is his favorite question these days.

The art project we decided to do was a Dr. Seuss hat.  It ended up turning out pretty cute.IMG_4449To create this I just drew a hat on some finger painting paper, then added some painter’s tape to keep parts of it white.   Then I put some red finger paint on it and let the boy have at it.

After it dried I pulled off the tape, which didn’t come off cleanly.  I tested it before starting the project and it work just fine, so I am not sure if I left it on too long or the finger paint had something to do with the not so easy removal.    Overall, I think it turned out cute, but I may want to look into using a different type of tape next time.  I have seen others do crafts similar to this with tape before, what kind did you use?  When you removed it, did some paper get taken with it?

I love doing those tape projects. I wish I would have thought to do a Suess hat, great idea. I use masking tape when I do those projects and I usually use cardstock rather than construction paper. I’ve never had any paper rip off of it.

Thanks for the tips. I will make sure to use them the next time I do a tape project.

Very neat craft! I’ve used blue tape on painting paper before and had the same problem with it taking some of the paper off too.

This was very cute. I never thought to use tape to make the stripes. I just drew out the hat for my daughter to paint. Try the purple painter’s tape, I think it is the one to use on newer painted walls.

I totally agree with Jolly Green Mommy- the purple tape is supposed to be the least “stickiest.” Great technique!

What a great idea for younger kids. I was interested to read the comments on the tape to use, since I was thinking of doing a resist project myself, but wasn’t sure what tape is best.

I’ve heard the following are good tapes to try: watercolor tape ($$$),
purple painter’s tape ($$), or masking tape ($). Let me know if you try any
of them and how it works out for you! The blue painter’s tape may work well
too on a different type of paper other than finger painting paper. Good
    luck.

This is so cute, I totally missed Dr. Seuss’s birthday this year. I made a hat like this for Emily to wear last year and she had no interest in wearing it! Thank you for linking up to stART this week, I always enjoy your ideas :0)
