Captured By Love, a novel by Jody Hedlund, takes place on Mackinac Island during the War of 1812.  The story revolves around two childhood friends who haven’t seen each other in several years, Angelique Labelle and Pierre Durant.  Angelique always had a crush on the immature Pierre, but he merely saw her as a little sister.  Angelique was  young when Pierre storm off the island to become a fur trader, after a fight with his father.  Several years later, grown up and now a spy for the Americans, Pierre returns to make amends with his family and help end the war before returning to the fur trading business. However, seeing  Angelique has interfered with his plans.

Storyline
“Pierre Durant is a voyageur–a fur trader who left his family home to find freedom and adventure. He’s been gone five years and when he returns, his family’s farm is at the mercy of the British invaders.

Torn between the life he’s grown used to and guilt over leaving his brother and mother, he’s drawn back into the loyalist fight against the British–and into a relationship with Angelique Labelle, a beautiful local girl who’s been befriended by the daughter of the British commander. As tensions mount and the threat of violence increases, both Angelique and Pierre must decide where their loyalties rest, how far they will go to find freedom, and how much they will risk to find love.” (Bethany House)

Overall Thoughts
Jody Hedlund does it again.   I love how she brings fictional stories into an historical event.  She has a way of taking me back and helping me to visualize what it might have been like to live during different moments in time.  She brings history to life. I especially love when I learn about a historical event that is new to me or I wasn’t aware of all the details.  Captured By Love filled me in on the major part Mackinac Island played during the War of 1812.  As always, I highly recommend reading the Author’s Note in the back.  It’s one of my favorite features of Hedlund’s books.  In this section she fills you in with all the history that inspired her choice of setting.

As for the fictional part of Captured By Love, I loved it as well.   This story has a little more romance then suspense, but it kept me flipping the pages.  I read through it so quickly that I can see this being a book I pull off the shelf again.

All in all, another great historical fiction from Jody Hedlund.
