The ABC’s of GOD {Review}

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Read my full disclosure policy .

125X125IconWe recently had the opportunity to review The ABC’s of GOD by readtheWord.  It is an iPad app that was created by a parent of three, school teacher, and Bible student.  Its main goal is to provide families with the opportunity to share with their children who God says He is from His Word.  Each letter in the alphabet teaches one of God’s traits.

A Little Info About ABC’s of GOD…

  • Offers 4 types of activities- Learn Letters (each letter reveals a truth about God), Fridge Letter Match, Chalkboard, and Word Search.
  • Incorporates three learning styles (visual, auditory, and kinesthetic).
  • Up to 4 children can play, each having their own individual account, with progress and rewards saved for next time.
  • It cost $1.99 and can be purchase through iTunes.

Watch a short clip from the video below for a better glimpse into the app.

So, here is my honest opinion of the app.

Plus(es):

  • Emphasis on Scripture – Scripture is used on transition screens,  in find the letter games and each trait that is revealed also has an explanation with a corresponding bible verse. All these traits are stored in the child’s treasure chest, where they can visit.
  • Visually Appealing – The graphics are sharp and colorful. The design is fun and playful.
  • Age Appropriate – The individual activities are engaging and, for the most part, self-explanatory. My son picked it up very quickly.
  • Music – The background music is nice, especially considering it’s a children’s app.  It definitely won’t drive the parents insane.  At the same time, kid’s will love its cheerful and upbeat melody.
  • Variety – From learning to write letters to teaching upper and lowercase letters and from word searches to spiritual truths this app covers a lot of territory. And since you have to finish a certain number of activities before more are unlocked this app doesn’t get old quickly.

     Wish(es):

    There really isn’t a lot to wish for from this app. As I said in the beginning, its main goal is to teach children about who God says He is from His Word.  And it accomplishes it.  The following wishes are really more about letter instruction.

  • Letter Formation –  A couple of the letters (such as the lowercase q and d) are taught to be written a little differently than I’m used to, but once you’ve unlocked the chalk board you’re free to write the letters how you prefer. All 26 letters are around the chalk board and you can tap them individually to switch between upper and lower case.

    Overall, The ABC’s of GOD is a quality app and well worth the purchase.  It teaches about the God we serve and my sons loves it and asks to play it all the time. I don’t know if you could ask for more in an app for kids.

      I try to read the bible verses in transition screens to my son but they change too fast and I think the bible verse should read aloud to the child…maybe it does and I haven’t found it yet. Great app though!

      @Stephanie, I would have loved to have the verses be read aloud to the children, but because of copyright issues with the various Bible translation distributers I had to limit the amount of actual words from any certain translation … thus no read-aloud. But it’s definitely something that i’ll keep in mind and attempt to work through. Thanks for the feedback!
