3 Things I Learned My First Year of Homeschooling

This post may contain affiliate or advertiser links. Read my full disclosure policy .

Our first “official” year of homeschool is in the books.  Our final day of school was May 22nd.  Whew!  What a year!

I started off strong and full of ideas that required a lot more planning on my part. I was trying to find and do a craft every day to go with either our history or science lessons.

Yeah, I was being an over achiever. Add all my lesson planning for my co-op and a baby on the move, and this mama got burnt out!  So, all the extra plans got thrown out the window by Christmas, even attending the second term of co-op.

From there we took a nice, long 3-week winter break. We celebrated birthdays, read books, enjoyed the holidays and just spent some quality family time with each other.

Once we got back into school, we took things a bit slower and we weren’t as rigid with our schedule.  We learned to work around and take advantage of when little brother was napping.  We embraced snowy days and played.  If needed, we took a day off during the week and used the weekend to catch up.

And in the end, we did it!  We successful completed our first year of homeschool and we all survived it.  And go figure, we’re going to do it again next year!

My Biggest Blessing: My son. God blessed me with a child that loves to learn and who was always ready to jump into his school work.  He enjoyed all his lessons, nothing bored him.  The only complaints were few and far between and usually were related to copy work.

My Biggest Struggle: Me, plain and simple.  I’m a planner and can quickly become frustrated, irritated and impatient when things aren’t going according to plan.  I get a mind set on how things should go and missed out on the freedom of homeschool.  The freedom to stop to dig deeper, to pause and see the wonder, and to soak in moments of time God has given me with these boys.

All in all I learned 3 important lessons this year:

  • I don’t have to do it all.
  • Flexibility is a must.
  • Patience is a virtue…and I need more of it.

How did your year go?

This puppy sure does love to get her vitamin D any This puppy sure does love to get her vitamin D anyway she can get it! We could all learn a little something from her. Did you know that vitamin D plays an important role in immune function? Yep. And right now boosting your immune system is one of the best things you can do because it’s your body’s key defense when it comes to fighting a virus. Vitamin D is just one of the many ways you can support your immune system. A few of my friends and I will be sharing more ways you can be proactive with your health and your family’s during the winter months tonight. Come learn what has helped us.

You all, it is so important to do everything you c You all, it is so important to do everything you can to make sure to maintain your health and your family's too this season. My family and I always take proactive steps in the winter. Honestly, the steps we have taken in the past have kept my family healthy and we rarely get sick. This year we are adding some extra things to help support our immune system. I've had several people asked me what I'm doing, so a few of my friends and I are actually going to have a little sharing session this Wednesday night (8:15 EST). We will be sharing all the ways we stay proactive with our health, especially in the winter. We'll have some practical tips, as well as some, must-haves to keep on hand to help your family stay above that wellness line.

It's happening this Wednesday (11/18) at 8:15 pm EST. Let me know if you want in and I will get you the dets.

We will be talking about essential oils, but there are so many other things we do as well. We will have a packet for everyone that comes, so you won't have to worry about your hand cramping from all the notes you'll want to write down!
You all, I can't believe it is November! However, You all, I can't believe it is November! However, I'm so glad it is because I am tired of all the crazy this year and I need to change my attitude! I'm going to be intentional this month and practice gratitude.

Here's the thing, I think you should join me because research studies show that finding a bit of thankfulness each day can actually increase your happiness level and decrease depression!! It also increases physical health (hello cold & flu season), brain function, and a sense of fulfillment. I know, with everything going on in the world right now I could use a little more of ALL of that!

So, who's with me? What are you thankful for today?

🍂Today I am thankful for the colorful fall leaves swirling by my windows. 🍂
I love this reminder from the Lord! Last week was I love this reminder from the Lord!

Last week was our first week back to homeschool. And I think it is safe to say that we all dealt with an array of emotions that week. I had to give myself a timeout the first day!! So, this reminder is perfect as we begin this week

After evaluating how things went I can see that it was my thoughts and attitude that was the ultimate cause of my feelings of frustration and irritation. Things weren’t going the way I had planned.

I mean, let’s be honest this year isn’t really going as any of us have planned. Am I right?

Here’s the thing, we have a choice in how we think, and since our thoughts affect our emotions, we have a choice in how we feel.

But praise the Lord we don’t have to let our circumstances dictate our attitude or the the way we think!

WHO ELSE NEEDS THE SPIRIT TO RENEW THEIR THOUGHTS AND ATTITUDE THIS WEEK?
